VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and Landlines are both technologies that facilitate voice communication, but they do so in different ways:

  • VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) uses the Internet to transmit voice data. VoIP converts your voice into data packets that are then sent over the Internet to the recipient. VoIP systems can be more flexible, often offering a wide range of features such as call forwarding, video conferencing, and more, usually at a lower cost than traditional landlines.
  • Analogue landlines operate over a network of physical cables and switchboards. This is known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Landlines tend to offer more stable and clear connections but usually come with fewer features and can be more expensive in the long term.

VoIP and landline technologies can interconnect via special gateways that translate the digital signals from VoIP into analog signals for the landline and vice versa. These gateways allow VoIP users to make calls to landline numbers and receive calls from landline users. Hybrid IP PBX systems and SIP trunks often make use of these gateways.

To use a traditional landline phone with VoIP, you’ll typically need an Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA). The ATA connects to your landline phone and your broadband Internet router.

Here’s how to set it up:

  • Plug the ATA into your Internet router: This usually involves a simple Ethernet cable.
  • Connect your landline phone to the ATA: This is usually done using the standard phone cable.
  • Configure Settings: Depending on your VoIP provider, you may need to configure the settings on the ATA to make and receive calls.
  • Dial as usual: Once everything is set up, you can start making calls using your landline phone over VoIP.

VoIP doesn’t inherently require a landline to operate. You can use VoIP services with various devices including computers, smartphones, softphone extensions or specialised VoIP phones that connect directly to the Internet. These devices use your broadband connection to make and receive calls, bypassing the need for traditional landline infrastructure.
