What is business broadband?

Business broadband refers to high-speed internet services specially designed for commercial use. Unlike home broadband, it’s designed to support multiple users, large-scale data transfers, and high-demand applications and phone packages vital to businesses. It includes:

  • Single Order Products: These are new age, data-led broadband solutions, which eliminate the need for Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) and employ Over-the-Top services like Voice over IP.
  • WLR Products: The traditional broadband system that relies on older copper line technology. These products will be gradually phased out by the end of 2025 as the UK switches off the PSTN. Read more about this transition and how to future proof your telecommunications.
  • Internet Leased Lines: These offer businesses a dedicated, high-speed connection, delivering stability and unrivalled performance.

Collectively, these options provide a versatile, adaptable suite of broadband solutions for businesses of all sizes.

SOGEA

SOGEA (Single Order Generic Ethernet Access) is a versatile business broadband solution that combines fibre and copper technologies.

It utilises fibre optic cables from the local exchange to the green cabinet (PCP) to ensure high-speed and reliable connectivity.

From the green cabinet to the end-user premises, the connection transitions to copper. This hybrid approach offers an affordable mid-tier solution, reducing installation costs by utilising existing infrastructure while maintaining exceptional speed (up to approximately 80 Mbps) and stability compared to ADSL or copper-only alternatives.

SOGFAST

SOGFAST is an enhanced business broadband solution that offers faster speeds compared to SOGEA for clients who meet the minimum requirements.

It leverages the existing copper infrastructure from the green cabinet to the end-user premises while taking advantage of the reduced distance travelled. This results in greater speeds, reaching up to approximately 330 Mbps, making it an attractive option for businesses with demanding connectivity needs.

SOADSL

SOADSL (Single Order Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a transitional business broadband product bridging the gap between legacy WLR-based services and true Single Order solutions. It utilises the same copper cables as traditional ADSL, but with the key difference that it doesn’t require a WLR service agreement.

As SOADSL relies on the existing copper infrastructure, it shares the same speed limitations (approximately 24 Mbps) and service interruptions as ADSL. Therefore, it is offered as an option only in areas where FTTP and SOGEA are not yet available, providing an easy transition for businesses in non-fibre-enabled locations.

Business Broadband Products (with WLR)

Discover the traditional method of broadband provision with Wholesale Line Rental (WLR). With decades of reliability, this business broadband connection utilises copper line technology.

However, as fibre technology advances, faster and more dependable options have emerged. WLR broadband is recommended as a temporary business internet solution until upgrading to Single Order Broadband or FTTP becomes feasible. As we approach 2025 and the “Great WLR Switch Off,” the availability of WLR Broadband will depend on fibre enablement and proximity to the green cabinet (PCP). Read more about the PSTN switch off to learn how to prepare your business.

Explore the available options for Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) broadband below and contact us with your query.

FTTC

Upgrade your broadband experience with FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet), a technologically advanced solution that brings together the benefits of both fibre and copper lines.

By leveraging fibre optic technology from the exchange to the cabinet and utilising copper for the final connection to your premises, FTTC delivers faster and more reliable speeds compared to ADSL.

It is an excellent choice if you’re awaiting a full-fibre solution in your area. With download speeds of up to 80 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 20 Mbps, FTTC ensures enhanced connectivity for your business requirements

Internet Leased Lines (Ethernet)

Experience dedicated bandwidth, guaranteed speeds, and unparalleled reliability with Ethernet leased lines. These dedicated connections are ideal for businesses with high-speed internet requirements and significant demand for bandwidth. Unlike shared fibre broadband, Ethernet leased lines ensure your internet connection is private, secure, and free from congestion caused by other users.

With symmetrical upload and download speeds, you can rely on consistent performance. If you’re located in an area where a full-fibre network is not yet available, Ethernet leased lines provide a stable connection for maintaining constant upload information. Enjoy the benefits of a reliable leased line solution with upload and download speeds of up to 35 Mbps.
